Being a mom is hard work. When you work outside the home, things become even more hectic. You are being pulled in a million directions. It feels like you have something to do every hour of the day. It can become a little suffocating at times, but you do what you do because you love your family and want to care for them. However, even a mom needs a break.
It’s probably likely that there is no real space in your home where you can go to be completely alone. Even the bathroom isn’t a safe haven when you have kids. Giving yourself a space where you can just escape, though, is a good idea. Every mom should have a space of her own. You can create this in your home by making yourself a home office.
Defining Your Home Office
Your home office may not be where you go to work, but it can be a place where you can have some time to yourself and get some productive things done. You can make your space a place where nobody can bother you. Put a sign on the door that says “do not disturb” and institute a rule that when the sign is up, nobody bothers you.
Setting Up Your Home Office
Of course, you probably will need to set up your office. You want this to be your special space. It should look the way you want, so you can feel relaxed and comfortable in there.
To begin, you will need to come up with a design plan. This should consider all the aspects of your room. Make sure you map out what pieces of furniture you want and where they will go. Also, figure in windows and doors, and things like electrical outlets and internet hookups. Make sure you take measurements, too. You want all the pieces you pick out to fit.
As you create your design, remember to include pops of color and to choose smart storage solutions. You should take advantage of wall space, too, by hanging shelves that can be used for storage. Keep lighting in mind as well.
You want to create a space that will be functional and comfortable. So, try to choose some nice upholstered furniture, like an office chair, or if you have enough room, even add in a couch for a place to sneak a quick nap.
Using Your Home Office
Once you have your home office set up, you are now ready to start using it. This space can be very functional and actually help you to get a lot of things accomplished if you use it correctly. Obviously, you won’t be able to hide away all the time. You will probably be best off if you create a normal schedule. This way the family will know when you are using your office space so they leave you alone.
It’d be great if you could block off an hour every day to work in your office. However, you may only be able to get a half-hour or be able to take time a few times a week. Just figure out what will work best for your household situation and schedule it out.
When you are in your office space, you can do things like handle bills, manage the household budget, complete paperwork, and look over school papers. You can even schedule appointments or call a friend and chat. If you are even lucky, you can get in a nap or just play some computer games. The time is yours to do whatever you want with.
The nice thing about creating a home office is that you are still right there and available should anyone need you. If an emergency comes up, you are there to handle it. However, you are also given time to be alone where you can think and get tasks done that can be difficult to complete when you have kids and a spouse bugging you constantly or other things calling for your attention.
Building yourself your own room is a great idea that every mom should consider. Having this space that is just yours is a great way to help you get grounded and relax each day or whenever you can get away to enjoy it. Even if you are handling tasks, like balancing your checkbook, you are able to do it in a space you designed that makes you happy.
